George achieves a podium in Montreal
British Formula One driver George Russell finished on the podium and picked up 15 points after an eventful Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, where he'd previously finished fourth in 2022 and retired in 2023.
Rain impacts the weekend's Practice sessions
George and Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team had a positive start to the weekend despite Friday’s sessions being heavily affected by rain.
Following poor weather before the session, there was a 20-minute delay to the start of the weekend’s first Practice due to standing water. Once it was clear and FP1 got underway, a red flag resulted in limited running.
The rain continued to come and go throughout FP2, meaning conditions were changing each lap. After a few laps on Soft tyres on the dry track at the start of the session, rain meant George returned to the track on used Intermediates. He ended the session P2.
Though both of Friday’s sessions were impacted by the rain, George felt confident in the various weather conditions.
Due to the compromised Practice time on Friday, George and the team evaluated race pace during FP3. This session was their first opportunity to set the cars up and monitor data in dry weather.
George finished the weekend's final Practice session in P3.

George tops the timesheets
The threat of rain affecting Qualifying meant drivers were keen to set laps on the dry track before the weather took a turn.
After setting a solid first lap, George completed another run later in the first Qualifying segment on the same set of Softs. This placed him seventh and safely through to Q2.
Light rain began ahead of Q2. Undeterred, George went on to set the fastest time of Q2 and went through to the third Qualifying segment in P1.
With only one new set of Soft tyres left, George set his first lap of Q3 on used Softs. After the first runs from all drivers, George topped the timesheet with a lap of 1:12:000.
Despite being unable to improve during his second run on his new Soft tyres, George remained on pole.

Top three finish in Canada
Starting on pole for the second time in his career, George opted for Intermediate tyres due to a rainy start to the Canadian Grand Prix.
At the end of Lap 21, George had a small moment and was passed by both Lando Norris and Max Verstappen.
A Safety Car period allowed George to pit at the end of Lap 25 for new Intermediates. After the period was over, George restarted the race in P2.
As the track began to dry up, slick tyres became more of a possibility. Pitting on lap 45, George switched to Hard tyres and came back out in P3.
On Lap 49, George took advantage of a mistake from Norris and overtook him for P2. However, the two switched places once again on Lap 51.
Another Safety Car on Lap 54 allowed George to pit for Mediums. He rejoined P4.
Later in the race, George was looking to overtake Oscar Piastri for P3. He made an attempt on Lap 64, but contact resulted in him moving back to P5.
George spent the next few laps climbing back up to P3 after successfully overtaking Oscar Piastri for P4 and later team-mate Lewis Hamilton for P3. He finished the race third, picking up a podium and an important 15 points.
The 2024 F1 season will resume on 21-23 June for the Spanish Grand Prix.

George Russell, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team driver:
I’m disappointed with myself today. I made too many errors that set us back and cost us a chance of victory. I was really pushing the limits out there. That said, it feels great to be disappointed with P3. We’ve made small steps over the past few races and to come to Canada, get pole position and a podium is really encouraging. We’ve been one of the fastest cars on track all weekend, so we’ve definitely made progress. There are many positives to take away from here.
The conditions were incredibly challenging out there. Put a wheel even one millimetre off line and you would be in trouble. Unfortunately, the errors I made came with consequences as it let other cars past. Other drivers made errors too, but they didn’t come at the same cost. We were still able to battle back to the podium though with the pace we had. We will continue to work hard, develop the car, and I’m looking forward to heading to Barcelona.
