British Formula One driver George Russell finished P4 on the humid streets of the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix. He’d previously recorded a DNF in 2023 after a last-lap incident and had placed P14 in 2022.

Claiming fourth in 2024, George secured his best Formula One result in Singapore to date.

Gathering long-run data

Sporting their new livery in celebration of the team's Title and Technical Partner PETRONAS’ 50th anniversary, George and Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team focused on long runs on the Hard tyre during the weekend’s first Free Practice.

After briefly switching to Softs, George was back on the Hards for the remainder of the session and placed P16.

Fourth place finish for George

George began the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix from P4 on Medium tyres.

During the opening stages, George was under pressure from Oscar Piastri and Nico Hülkenberg. However, he was able to hold onto P4 and spent the remainder of his first stint managing his tyres.

Pitting at the end of Lap 27, George returned to the track in P8 on the Hard compound.

As drivers around George pitted, he was back up to P3 on Lap 39.

On Lap 44, Piastri, whose tyres were 10 laps fresher, was closing in on George and looking to overtake. He made the move on the following lap, moving George back into fourth.

In the later stages of the race, Charles Leclerc was hunting George down. Leclerc gained DRS on Lap 58, but in the end, George was able to hold him off and defend his position.

Crossing the line in fourth, George picked up 12 points.

Following a three-week break, the 2024 F1 season will resume on 18-20 October for the United States Grand Prix.

George Russell, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team driver:

After a very difficult Friday, we would have likely taken P4 in the Grand Prix. Our pace in Qualifying however made us believe we could achieve more. Today was no doubt a difficult race for us, both challenging in terms of our pace but also physically. The McLarens were very impressive and in another league to us, whilst Max (Verstappen) had the legs on us. We were able to hold off the Ferrari of Charles (Leclerc) in the closing stages, so it was very much an evening of damage limitation. Given the pace of the car, that was the very best we could have achieved.
We have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks to understand why we’ve struggled to challenge at the front in the past few races. We haven’t been as competitive since the summer break and that is frustrating. We will work hard to get on top of it though and hopefully the updates we bring to the next race in Austin will help us take a step closer to the front.
